Questions worth asking before you hand material over, plus the preparation, safety and record-keeping points that make a collection go smoothly.
Start with the basics about the buyer
- Can they describe what they buy and what they do not? A buyer who takes everything without asking is not assessing your material.
- Is weighing explained clearly, and can you see it happen?
- Do they arrange collection, or is loading and transport your responsibility?
- How and when is payment made, and what confirms the quantity handed over?
- Do they operate from a fixed premises you can contact afterwards?
Prepare the material before collection
- Keep ferrous and non-ferrous material apart.
- Keep e-waste and batteries out of metal loads.
- Remove obvious contamination where it is safe to do so, and do not attempt to dismantle hazardous items.
- Store material off the ground where possible and cover it if it is exposed to weather.
Safety and access
Tell the collection team about the access route, any lifting equipment on site and the rules that apply to visitors. Loads should be secured before anything moves, and heavy items should not be handled without suitable equipment.
What to share in your enquiry
- Photographs of the material.
- Approximate quantity and how it is stored.
- Location and preferred timing.
- Whether this is a one off clearance or an ongoing supply.
Why documentation matters
A clear record of what was collected and in what quantity protects both parties. Ask for it, and keep it with your own records.
